For non-binary froups, I have my Xnews set up to automatically kill all posts over 150 lines long. That allows for long reply threads and cascades, while blocking all but the tiniest attachments - occasionally a minute gif will sneak in under that. Bascically, I never see binary posts to non-binary froups.

I have had the same problems with not recieving all the posts. I gave up trying to figure it out. If I miss one too bad. As a matter of interest though what It would seem that the only news server at my disposal, that seems to have all posts, is a premium news server that I normally just use for downloading.
